Bagan is fairly unique for us in being not only a sight so amazing, but one that I don’t think we had ever heard of. 3000 temples and pagodas spread along the banks of the Irrawaddy in central Myanmar.

And the best way to see them is to trundle along on the back of a horse and cart through the fields. Enormous golden stupas, red brick monasteries and best of all – bright blue lizards make it an incredible 2 days. It’s like nothing we’ve ever seen before and totally unexpected.

We do get our first taste of Burmese food though – GRIM. How a country that borders China, India and Thailand can have developed such bad food is beyond us. They seem to have 10 – 15 dishes, various crap meats knee deep in oil, chutneys that taste of ‘the smell of wet dog’ and fried sugar for pudding. Sarah is quite fond of the fried sugar.
