We’ve headed down to SW Uganda, primarily to see wildlife, but it also happens to be one of the most incredible areas of natural beauty we’ve seen anywhere on our trip. It’s an area that for most people in the western world conjures up images of brutality and stories of genocide and murder.
But this little corner of the world, near the border of Uganda, Rwanda and Congo is seemingly peaceful and extremely beautiful.
And at the moment you can just turn up on the day, pay your money and see Gorillas. A group of 9 habituated gorillas in Mgahinga National Park have come across the border from Rwanda for a few months, meaning you don’t have to book months in advance to see them.
On the edge of the rift valley, the area is dominated by 3500m plus volcanoes, forming a backdrop to the rolling hills, terraced and cultivated, green volcanic plugs and sprawling lakes.
