We generally get worried if they can’t shut the plane door…But when you realize the sole aid for navigation is a Tom Tom attached to the dash, you wonder whether you’re on the right plane.
A 30 minute flight through valleys and skimming the tops of mountains delivers us to a short runway perched on the side of a mountain at Lukla, 8 days trek from Everest Base Camp. The runway stops with a cliff face but thankfully the plane slams to a stop with 10 metres to spare.
After meeting our guide and porter, we stroll througha green and lush valley, dotted with carved boulders depicting the Buddhist Mantra of compassion – Om Mani Pad Me Hum in giant black and white script.
