Shanghai

While illness limited our sightseeing, highlights were definitely Peoples Park and some more tips taken from Michael Palin’s ‘Round the world in 80 days’. At English Speakers’ Corner we held court over around 40 people, all keen to practise their English, ask questions about the industrial revolution (to check what they were taught in school) and in some cases serenade us!

For us, it was a great opportunity to ask about politics and Chinese life. They explained for us the marriage market next door where mums and dads advertise their offspring to potential suitors. It’s generally those panicking because their child has hit 25 and they want to make sure they will be cared for in later life.
