There are Chinese soldiers with guns (and some with riot shields) everywhere, on rooftops, in the streets, and even on the Minaret of the mosque - we were told early on that you do not take photos of the soldiers.
Outside the temple, the smoke of the incense and burning barley, and smell of Yak butter is everywhere, as each pilgrim offers it for the candles to Buddha. They queue like sardines to walk around the temple, and may have come from miles away, and taken years to get here.
Tom's highlight was peeing next to the David beckham poster in the holiest toilet of Tibet!
In the afternoon we made our way to the Summer Palace, where the Dalai Lamas used to live - you can see the current exiled Dalai Lama's home, including the bathroom with Western style toilet covered in money as offerings.
The walls are adorned with paintings depicting the history of Tibetan Buddhism, and we learnt that Tibetans also believe that they are descendants of monkeys (and have done for thousands of years)...
