Lake Manyara

Within 10 minutes of entering Lake Manyara National Park, we’d seen baboons, vervet monkeys, blue monkeys, impala and then the rarely seen (in this park anyway) lions. The impala suddenly ran off, and two big lionesses stalked into view, cruised round our jeep and wandered off into the long grass for a kip, causing untold panic amongst the animal life.

It’s a stunning place, sitting at the foot of Rift Valley escarpment. Shimmering grasslands in the midday heat. Hippos. Giraffes. Herds of Elephants. After Asia, it is an unbelievable sight to see unchained, happy, healthy elephants in the wild, with tusks, fighting. Breathtaking.
