Journey from hell - Part 4

And then the fun begins….

Ok, it’s a 2 hr ride up to Darjeeling. Wrong. After an hour of garage stops the driver gives up on a blind corner in the pitch black. He can’t go on. So you flag down a passing mini-bus and an argument ensues between the two drivers over money. We offer ridiculous money to get out of this situation. 5 minutes later in our new 4x4 the back door flings open and our bags are distributed over the mountain pass. Once we’ve located them all in the pitch black we begin, only to break down again 3 corners in. We walk up the steepest hill in India.

A flat tyre 45 minutes later gives us a chance to take in the fresh air before the final scary as hell descent into Darjeeling where the driver asks for a tip. We’ve had one meal in 48hrs. No liquid for fear of needing the toilet. There is beer at the hotel. Inexplicably in Northern India, it’s Fosters. It’s luke warm. Time for bed.
