A very long 18hr journey got us from Papua by plane and extremely bad roads to Rantapau in Sulawesi. A journey that was apparently necessary to go to a funeral the next day that we weren't invited to. But it's the thing to do in Sulawesi.

The animists in Tana Toraja have fairly intense funerals. They lasst 4 cdays, involve the slaughter of as many animals as you can get your hands on, and cost a fortune. They spend most their lives saving up for the big send off.

They're also kept in the coffin in the lounge for 7 months while they save up, being treated like they're still alive.

But as far as funerals went, it seemed like goof fun. A celebration of life and we were made to feel very welcome. Noisy and colourful, despite the Christian interlude as the guy converted to Christianity on his death bed. It was an incredible experience.
