Lake Toba

When it’s time to leave, we make our way back to Medan and then out on the Sumatran National Highway to Parapet and Lake Toba. An enormous Volcanic lake in the Caldera of an extinct volcano.

Incredible clouds float over the distant mountains and sheer cliffs that drop into the waters around us. It’s the perfect place for a few days chilling, swimming and diving and a drive in the most disgusting van we’ve ever been in around the island. The architecture is stunning with roofs designed to reflect the horns of the buffalo…

The Batak people are also a bit obsessed with death, with some of the 1000’s of tombs dotted around the island, bigger than the houses.
