On our first night in a Dani village, we were welcomed in by the whole community, tea was made, we settled down. Then about 2hrs later a man turned up, walked into the kitchen and attacked our guide with his fists. No explanation given, just ‘get out’.
We were immediately shunned by everyone in the village, we collected our stuff and got out quickly. To be honest, we were a bit scared!
After meeting two of the people who stayed there later on the trek, we think that the place had been booked up by organized tour groups in advance. Rather than just telling us it was full, violence was used to get rid of us.
Thankfully, 500m up the track, we met a nice guy who found us a house in his village…staying with 3 kids who lived on their own. We played footy, showed photos of home round the fire and had a wonderful time that no tourists would usually get to experience. There appears to be only one nasty person in Papua.

This photo is us in happier times at another village.
