The boat to Battambang from Siem Reap was one of the most stunning journeys we've done so far on this trip. Across Tonle Sap, the largest lake in SE Asia, into a wide river with floating villages to either side, then down through the mangroves and along a winding river for a further 6 hours until we reached our destination...

It was agonisngly slow - you don't want to flood houses by going too fast, and ridiculously hot as we sat on the roof for 9 hours in the blistering heat. You pass endless house boats, people making a living through fishing and not much else. These are very poor people, but the kids rush along the riverbanks shouting 'goodbye' and wave from their boats.

You get a glimpse into the lives of ordinary Cambodians, living in stilted or floating homes to avoid the wash out of the rainy season.
